#FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest: Police Arrest Kanu Brother, Lawyer and Others

Yesterday, the streets of Abuja bore witness to a powerful demonstration led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, as citizens demanded the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest underscored the growing concerns about the treatment of Kanu and the broader issues of justice and equality.

The protest was marked by clashes between security forces and demonstrators, with reports indicating the use of tear gas and multiple arrests. Among those detained were Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu. Sowore has pledged to escalate the protest, calling for the occupation of the FCT police command if the detainees are not released forthwith.

In response, government spokesperson Bayo Onanuga criticized Ejimakor’s involvement in the protest, questioning the propriety of a legal practitioner participating in demonstrations while a court case is pending. However, Sowore remains resolute, citing the need to challenge what he perceives as governmental hypocrisy and double standards.

The protest had a significant impact on the city, disrupting economic activities and causing widespread traffic congestion. In a show of support for the government’s position on Kanu’s detention, a counter-protest was organized, with participants advocating for adherence to the rule of law.

Sowore’s determination to proceed with the demonstration, despite a court order to the contrary, highlights the deep-seated issues and the urgent need for dialogue and resolution
